Stay Safe from Scams

June 16, 2025

Brett Martinez

It’s an unfortunate reality that scams are on the rise. We work hard to protect our Members, but the scammers are working just as hard to try and trick you out of your hard-earned money. While we maintain the highest levels of security and our fraud detection systems are strong, we know many people still willingly give money to scammers every day. Why does this happen, and how can you prevent it?

Scammers are clever and will say and do almost anything to get your money. They may offer an easy way to “earn” money, but if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Scammers often prey on emotions like fear or love, and they may spend days, weeks, or months trying to earn your trust. Some of the most common scams include:

  • Promises of prizes or big payoffs if you send them money.
  • Pressure to act immediately or something bad will happen.
  • Threats that you will go to jail or have to pay large fines if you don’t comply.
  • Requests for unusual forms of payment like gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or even gold.
  • A high-paying job that requires you to do little and asks for your account information and/or Social Security number.

Scammers will also impersonate businesses like Microsoft, Amazon, the IRS, law enforcement, and even RCU to get you to share your financial information. RCU will never call, email, or text you to ask you for sensitive information like your digital banking password, card number, six-digit verification code, or other sensitive information. If you think a communication from RCU is suspicious, don’t respond and contact us right away using one of the official methods on our website.

Remember, we are your trusted financial partner, and our mission is to serve your best interests. We are committed to keeping your funds and information safe. If someone is telling you to lie to us about your money, it’s a scam.

Please visit our website’s security center for tips on protecting yourself and your loved ones. If you suspect a scam or are concerned you may have shared sensitive information, reach out to us immediately. We care about your financial well-being and security, and we want to help you keep your money safe.

Best regards,

Brett Martinez
