What is a Cookie?

A “Cookie” is a text file that is placed on your hard disk by a website you visit. Cookies are uniquely assigned to you and can only be read by a web server in the domain that issued the Cookie to you. Cookies cannot be used to run programs or deliver viruses to your computer, but instead are used to remember certain information in order to make the site more effective for you to use again.

First-Party Cookie

Refers to a Cookie created by the domain of the website the user is visiting.

Third-Party Cookie

A Cookie that is placed by a domain other than that of the website the user is visiting.

HTTP Cookie

Is a small piece of data that a server sends to a user’s web browser.

Session Cookie

Is temporary, linking the actions of a user during the any given browser session. When the browser is closed, the cookie is deleted.

Device Local Storage

A type of web storage that stores data in a user’s browser.

Tracking Pixel

A 1×1 pixel image that is embedded in emails, banner ads, or other web pages.
