How do I know if a smog certificate will be required for my appointment at DMV Services?
Private party transfer: If the vehicle is over 4 model years old, a passing smog certificate is required. Diesel-powered vehicles need a passing smog certificate regardless of the model year.
Family member transfer: No smog certificate is required if the vehicle is a gift from a family member (parent, child, grandparent, grandchild, spouse, domestic partner, or minor siblings related by blood or adoption).
Registration renewal/duplicate title application: A passing smog check is required every other year. Check your California DMV notice for smog certificate requirements.
Motorcycles, boats, and electric vehicles are exempt from smog certificate requirements. Remember, smog certificates are valid for only 90 days.
